The Sense of Awe

Most of the times when we encounter something big, somebody great, something unique and awesome, we tend to be overwhelmed by a sense of awe. Things look to us being bigger than our life. We are totally awestruck. We consider such people way greater than who we are, and immediately place them to a high altar, far away from us.

Being in this state of awe, there is this very interesting thing that happens. We miss out the really understanding the person, concept, or the message. Say for example you happen to meet President Obama. Mere his presence beside you will make you so conscious, and you get so much overwhelmed by that sense of awe, that you hardly listen what he has to say to you. This sense of awe creates a wall breaking the communication. It blocks a possible dimension that could have been otherwise created. Being lost in awe, we fail to appreciate the other person, or the other thing (the subject of awe).

On deeper contemplation, it appears that the subject of awe is also pretty much trivial. He/she is also like a common human being as we are. It is only that they thought something different, and have a different outlook.

It is so enlightening to have that taste of breaking the wall of awe, piercing through it, and really listening, understanding and appreciating the subject of awe. It might be anything, or any body. Having done this we come to the realization that what separates the commoners from the men and women of distinction is nothing supernatural. It is very normal, simple and humane. Each of us has that potential to rise above mediocrity and shine as men/women of distinction. The only thing that is required is a shift in our mental models.
